The objective is to have something that is functional, accurate, timely and easily maintainable rather than a work of art. But it must work on mobile phones.

The options seem to be these:

Native WordPress	Comes with basic system. More robust. Better maintained.	Pop-up and slideshow behaviour poor. Media library system poor.
ncvp image gallery	Good slideshow behaviour. No change to normal pages or workflow. Can be removed without breaking anything. Based on Fancybox.	Needs maintaining
Easy FancyBox Now called Firelight Lightbox	Good slideshow behaviour, but not as configurable as ncvp image gallery	This, and plugins like it, tend to come and go. They also tend to use old versions of FancyBox

Conclusions: I'll use ncvp-image-gallery while it works. Firelight Lightbox when it's broken.
